Water, Health and Biodiversity in the Igarapé do Gigante Microbasin

The first call to support projects from the Manauara Community Association, promoted in the second half of 2022 with the theme  “Water, Health and Biodiversity in the Igarapé do Gigante Microbasin”, had as winners the projects “ Giant Women” and “Native Tree Nursery Parque Mosaico Amazônia“.

To provide full transparency to the notice process, we have gathered on this page information and links about all competing projects, the rules of the call and the voting criteria adopted by our Council when choosing the winners.

WINNING PROJECTS

GIANT WOMEN

Objective: to empower women and girls living in the community of Redenção, on the banks of the Igarapé do Gigante, to face menstrual poverty in a sustainable way and raise awareness about promoting menstrual care your health.
Activities: (a) ecological absorbent production workshops for 50 women in the community, aiming for their own consumption and income generation through its sale; (b) conversation circles on women's comprehensive health with the support of UBS nurses and local activists; (c) campaign to produce and distribute ecological sanitary pads to raise awareness among the community about the issue of menstrual poverty and the need to reduce polluting waste in the environment.
Proponents: artisans and community leaders from the Rip Art Project, Maria Cristina Pereira da Silva and Mayara Carvalho Barbosa.
Execution period: March to October 2023

NATIVE TREES NURSERY AMAZON MOSAIC PARK

Objective: production of native Amazonian tree seedlings and their planting in degraded permanent preservation areas on the banks of the Igarapé do Gigante and its tributaries. The initial goal is to produce around 50 thousand trees in the first 12 months after the nursery begins operation.
Activities: (a) physical implementation of the nursery (earthworks, construction of a project approved by the City Hall, finishing, hydraulic and electrical installations, initial preparation of the beds and shaded area), ( b) assembly and management of the dedicated team (including workers under the CLT regime such as nurserymen, service providers and technicians such as forestry engineers), (c) sowing and cultural treatments of native tree seedlings (transferring seed into tubes or bags, fertilization, irrigation, organic pest control, etc.), own and third-party plantations in degraded areas of APPs in the Igarapé do Gigante watershed, permanent search for partners, suppliers and customers.
Proponents: Associação Parque Mosaico Amazônia.

NOTICE RULES

The objective is to promote and strengthen, with financial support and technical support, actions and projects of public interest developed by social organizations and collectives of civil society generating a positive socio-environmental impact in the city of Manaus (AM).

Links to the registration form, complete regulations and other documents that should be sent are at the end of this page. 

Regularly constituted civil society organizations with headquarters in the city of Manaus, social movements and activist collectives, whether formalized or not, may register, as long as they work on socio-environmental causes in the city of Manaus. Manaus.Registrations are open from September 19, 2022 to October 19, 2022.

Support will be given to projects that promote systemic changes in the West and Central-West zones of Manaus, foster dialogue on the topic ofsustainability,minimize environmental degradation andsocial inequality.Preferably, projects mustbenefit women in vulnerable situations, black or indigenous peoplein this region of the city,or protect plant and animal species listed as threatened with extinction by ICMBio.

The notice is divided into two fronts, and projects can apply to only one of them:

Frente A – Projects that contribute to forest restoration with native Amazon species in the Igarapé do Gigante microbasin.Value to be claimed for projects in Front A: from R$ 50,000 to R$ 100,000

Front B – Projects that promote positive impact in the areas of health, education, environmental education, biodiversity, waste management and others, as long as they  meet  the theme “Water, Health and Biodiversity in the Igarapé do Gigante Basin”.Amount to be claimed for projects on Front B: from R$ 25,000 to R$ 50,000

Projects must be fully executed between January and December 2023, and may have any duration within this time frame. This means that all proposed actions and the release of financial resources must take place in 2023.
The registered initiatives will be evaluated by the Council of the Manauara Community Association, and the result will be ratified by the members of the Assembly of the Manauara Community Association. It is up to the members of the Assembly to resolve any omissions and give the final word on the approval of projects, including the possibility of requesting changes and improvements.There is no appeal against the final and sovereign decision of the Assembly on the result of this notice.

The evaluation of initiatives registered in this notice will be carried out based on the following criteria:

Transformation potential: whether the results of the activities proposed by the project can promote a positive systemic impact (structural transformations for the target audience or area covered by the project);

Effectiveness: concrete possibility of causing the proposed impact (taking into account the resources to be used versus project objectives) and potential for permanence of the intended objectives (possibility of generating continuous transformation after the end of the project).

Feasibility: adequacy between inputs and proposed activities / products developed / expected results / intended impact (which will be expressed in the project's theory of change, to be explained in the registration process), as well as between the stages of transfer of resources / execution of activities / rendering of accounts / measurement of results, (which will be expressed in the physical-financial schedule, to be explained in the registration process).

Operation in Areas of Socio-Environmental Vulnerability: if the project of the group, collective or proposing organization is aimed at vulnerable communities or threatened biomes in the west and center-west zones of Manaus.

Priority Beneficiaries: if the project of the proposing group, collective or organization intends to benefit women in vulnerable situations, black people, indigenous people or plant and animal species listed as threatened with extinction by ICMBio.

Feasibility and financial sustainability: if the resources requested and budget estimates presented are compatible with values ​​practiced in the Manaus market and, most especially, if the project helps to generate revenue and contributes to the financial sustainability of the organization or of the benefiting community.

Those responsible for the selected projects will be contacted by email and/or telephone and their names will be published on the Manauara Community Association website by 12/09/2022.
